Pulmonary fibrosis is a kind of unexplained chronic interstitial lung disease without safe and effective treatment method. Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), as a compound of gingko leaf extract, have shown against fibrosis in rats with good effect, and high safety. This paper summarized the mechanism of action of ginkgo biloba extract resisting to pulmonary fibrosis, including improving oxidative stress, inhibiting apoptosis, regulation of cytokine network (transforming growth factor-β1, tumor necrosis factor-α and CTGF, etc) and regulation of MMP-9/TIMP-1 system balance. This paper mainly reviews the research progress on the antipulmonary fibrosis mechanism of ginkgo biloba extract.
