Abstract:Objective To observe the expression of Smad4 protein in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma of elderly patients and investigate the relationships between Smad4 protein expression and clinical pathological features. Methods Immunohistochemical technique was used to detect the expression of Smad4 protein in 65 tissues of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and paired para-carcinoma tissues. Results The positive rate of Smad4 in the laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma was obviously lower than that in the para-carcinoma tissues (P < 0.05). The Smad4 protein expression in the laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma had correlations with differentiated degree of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and lymph node metastasis (P < 0.05). Conclusions Smad4 may contribute to the carcinogenesis and development of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and play an important role in the process of differentiation, infiltration and metastasis of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
