Objective To explore the expressions of Survivin mRNA and CK19 mRNA in the peripheral blood of the patients with gastric cancer and their clinical significance. Methods Expressions of Survivin mRNA and CK19 mRNA in peripheral blood were analyzed by RT-PCR in 89 patients with gastric cancer. Statistical analysis was conducted to analyze the diagnostic and prognostic value of Survivin mRNA and CK19 mRNA in the peripheral blood of the patients with gastric cancer. Results RT-PCR revealed that the Survivin mRNA and CK19 mRNA were both significantly higher in the peripheral blood of the patients with gastric cancer than in the normal controls.ROC curves revealed that both Survivin mRNA and CK19 mRNA were promising diagnostic biomarkers for gastric cancer. Chi-square test revealed that both Survivin mRNA and CK19 mRNA expressions were positively associated with TNM stage of the patients with gastric cancer. Kaplan-Meier curves revealed that the patients with gastric cancer which were both Survivin-positive and CK19-positive had the lowest 5-year survival rate after surgery, which was statistically significant. Conclusions Survivin mRNA and CK19 mRNA are upregulated in the peripheral blood of the patients with gastric cancer. They are promising biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognostic prediction of the patients with gastric cancer.
