Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of androgens on content and distribution of body fat of middleaged women from Qinghai-Tibet plateau. Methods In the study 116 healthy women aged 40-60 years who received medical examination from June 2014 to May 2015 in our hospital were enrolled, and divided into reproductive stage (31 cases), perimenopausal stage (26 cases) and postmenopausal stage (59 cases) three groups. Age, body mass index (BMI), index of body fat, blood dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), total testosterone (TT) and free androgen index (FAI) were compared among the three groups. Pearson correlation coefficient was performed to analyze the relationship between body fat and androgen. Results Age, percentage of trunk fat to body fat and A/G ratio in the reproductive stage group were significantly lower than those in the other two groups (p < 0.05), adipose percentage of android area was significantly lower than that in the postmenopausal stage group (p < 0.05). Age and percentage of trunk fat to body fat in the perimenopausal stage group were significantly lower than those in the postmenopausal stage group (p < 0.05). TT and FAI in the postmenopausal stage group were significantly lower than those in the other two groups (p < 0.05). Pearson analysis results showed that TT was positively correlated with BMI, total body fat content and ratio (p < 0.05), while FAI was positively correlated with BMI, total body fat content and ratio, adipose percentage of android area and A/G (p < 0.05). Conclusions For middle-aged women from Qinghai-Tibet plateau, the higher the androgen level, the more the body fat content and the more centrally distributed the body fat. But androgen may not be the main influencing factor.
