Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a major microvascular complication of eyes in diabetic patients, is one of the major causes of blindness. Pathogenesis of DR is complex, and the whole pathological process involves the changes of inflammation, enzymes, cytokines, ion channels, oxidative stress and other related factors. Interleukin-18 is a cytokine that participates in many pathological changes of human by large number of signal pathways. It has been reported that IL-18 influences the occurrence of macroangiopathy and microangiopathy by many ways, and is involved in the pathogenesis of DR. We overview the study progress of signal pathways of IL-18 in DR.
